BIO
New York City based painter/artist David Sloan was born on the unappreciated and scraggly old shores of Lake Erie in Ohio to a clairvoyant seamstress mother and a tug-boat operating father. They divorced when David was a baby, setting up the geographical dichotomy that would influence his life forever; his mother moved to NYC and his father stayed in Ohio. David studied under and was heavily influenced by the incomparable and deeply missed New York City artist Don Stacy from 2004 until his passing in 2008. David's artistic journey is quite fascinating! His education at the Art Students League of New York and the School of Visual Arts provided him with a solid foundation in art, while his deep dive into Dutch art showcases his dedication to understanding different styles and techniques. The three month residency at the NDSM Treehouse in Amsterdam was a pivotal moment for him, allowing him to absorb the culture and creativity of a city that has inspired countless artists. It is interesting to explore how his experiences there translated into his work—as he adopt new techniques, themes, or perspectives.
David's evolution into modern surrealism is intriguing! His work being showcased in various galleries across the country speaks to his talent and the resonance of his artistic vision. The focus on framing and fortifying his painted wooden constructions in urban settings reflects a thoughtful engagement with the environment and the role of art in public spaces. It can be said he’s not only creating art but also sparking conversations about the purpose of public and street art in a bustling metropolis like New York City.
David’s paintings are more likely to make you think of seeing the interior of a bar inside a spaceship in a child’s open eyed way—seeing it for the first time and thru a fractured wild reception of color and primal precision with figures that may be planetary slender creatures creeping with reds and blues and yellows—and/or are also intergalactic seers who stumble forth, malformed, from within his own malformed self.
I am currently on a sabbatical. I will return to my work as soon as I find an educational daycare for my year and a half old son, Gabriel.
